PIT Members Attend Cosmic Cartography with Roman
July 21st, 2025
Conference attendees at the Cosmic Cartographies with Roman Symposium.

This week, many members of our PIT attended the Cosmic Cartography with Roman: Advances in Galaxy Structures, Distributions, Dark Matter, and Dark Energy Roman Science conference hosted at Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, MD. The conference was held over five days from July 14-18, 2025.

A total of 30 PIT members were in attendance, with 21 of those members being early-career scientists in our Junior Members of the PIT (JuMP) organization. The PIT made an incredible showing at the conference-- of our 30 attending members, 22 contributed content (posters or talks) to the symposium. PIT members gave 16 talks and presented 7 posters. Topics presented by PIT members included photometric redshifts, shear and clustering measurement pipeline development, cosmological inference, and more. Our PIT was also highlighted in a talk by PIT Working Group Chairs Ami Choi and Tim Eifler, giving the conference attendees an update on what we have been working on and all the progress we have made towards being able to do cosmology with Roman.

Additional highlights of the conference included:

  • A panel discussion on results of previous surveys and their implications for Roman, which featured PIT Inclusion Chair Rachel Mandelbaum. Rachel and others shared lessons from working on other survey collaborations and ideas for building Roman off of their successes and challenges.

  • Many conference-goers attended Astronomy on Tap Baltimore, where PIT member Niko Šarčević gave a very engaging public lecture on cosmology, titled “All the Pieces Matter: How We Build the Story of Space From Distorted Light.” The crowd enjoyed not only Niko’s humorous lecture but also her excitement towards the city of Baltimore!

  • The HLIS PIT JuMP leaders, Yoki Salcedo Hernandez and Katherine Laliotis, organized an early-career scientists social event. The event was open to all early-career scientists at the conference, and it was attended by approximately 30 people.

Below, you can find a few photos of PIT members delivering their talks and representing the PIT at the conference. If you’re interested in learning more about what was presented at the conference, please check out the conference booklet where you can find abstracts of all the presentations given!

We are so proud of all our PIT members for the wonderful work they have been doing. Go Roman!
